365 Day Movie Challenge (2015) - #116: Thanks for Sharing (2012) - dir. Stuart Blumberg
There aren’t too many surprises in this drama - and yes, it’s definitely a drama, not a romantic comedy (like it was marketed as) - but there are a few good performances. Mark Ruffalo, Josh Gad and Pink are all very good as sex addicts, although Tim Robbins in particular is excellent. The screenplay is highly predictable, including the entire subplot with Ruffalo and love interest Gwyneth Paltrow, but the one nice thing was the subplot with Gad and Pink, which has an unexpected sweetness and not the usual romantic flinging-together of male and female characters. I also liked Joely Richardson as Robbins’ wife, Patrick Fugit as their son, Isiah Whitlock Jr. as a recovering alcoholic and Emily Meade as one of Ruffalo’s former flames who has issues of her own. I’m not surprised that the film got mixed reviews, though; as hard as it tries to be meaningful and make profound statements about human interaction and growth, it never totally shakes off its mantle of blandness.
